I am currently gathering information and photos about the history of the area, and will expand this section as I find material to include.
There have been a number of changes in the 8 years I have been living in the area. In no particular order (and no doubt missing much):
Peggy's Burger Place at 1950 Gerrard St. E. became Jimmy's Place
Peter's Restaurant at 1929 Gerrard St. E. is now Karen's Restaurant and Tavern
The Kingsmount
Art Gallery at 1879 Gerrard St. E. moved to 1958 Gerrard
St. E., becoming Wayne Campbell Gallery + Frames in
the process. Soft Option Upholstery took over the old
location.
In 2004 a new restaurant opened at 1875 Gerrard E., Upper Beach Café. It closed in the spring of 2007, but...
Fred's Cleaners at the corner of Gerrard and Glenmore has gone, and is the new home of the Upper Beach Café
Overtime Bar and Grill became Just Jenny's Sports Bar and is now Ruby Tuesdays
The computer training business at 763 Woodbine Ave. downsized to half of its former self a few years ago, the other half becoming Sina Dry Cleaners. The training facility later closed and was eventually replaced by the well-intentioned, but badly managed, Felines First Cat Rescue. Both cats and cleaners are now gone.
Daisy Mart on the southeast corner used to be something else (after DI MARIA BROS as seen in the picture at http://images.nycsubway.org/i19000/img_19367.jpg). Was it D'Oliva Bros?
A game of musical stores took place to the east of Daisy Mart
within the last year. Mike Van Steinburg's
WANNABEEADRUMMER
moved east, across the lane (what was there before?); Tanya
MacFarlane's Mosaic
Beach moved into the vacant store; and George McCartney
moved Sabre
& Dragoon into Mosaic Beach's former location.
The hydroponics supply store, Grow, at 1928 Gerrard St. E., replaced (IIRC) a convenience store.
McCarthy's Irish Pub, opened at 1801 Gerrard St. E. about 5 years ago, replacing Kay's Variety Store.
